Crew Positions

Below is the list of crew positions here at Mantis and Moon. We are always looking for volunteers or for those with experience.

If you are interested in applying for a position, fill out the form below. Be sure to include what position(s) you are interested in finding out more about in the comment field.

Core Team

1. Director ( D ) TEAM -See more.

1. Provide 'vision' for project
2. Work closely w/ writer of script noting key elements
3. Meet w/ talent in pre-production to establish characters
4. Dissect script, scene by scene, shot by shot, line by line.
5. Provide rough story board or shot list to DP.
6. Work w/ DP, PC, SR and Location Scout (if applicable) finding locations
7. Direct rehearsals
8. Call ' action ' and ' cut ' (no talent or crew should assume shot is over until called)
9. Inform SR of any 'special' sound or audio issues on scene by scene basis
10. Analyze dailies with DP, Writer (and Editor if applicable)
11. Review editing with Editor, Writer etc.

2. Assistant Director ( AD ) PER-SHOOT -See more.

Assistant Director AD provides support to the Director. They should carry a clipboard and pen at all times - dictating director notes, transmitting info from Director to DP, PC and vice versa. In production this person will also handle script continuity. They will know the project backwards and forward. This person will work closely with the Project Coordinator PC and DP as well.

PREPRODUCTION

1. Work w/ Director/ Writer compiling notes
2. Help Director w/ script dissection, rough story board or shot list
3. Greet and Introduce Talent at auditions, provide scripts and background info on project
4. Distribute and collect releases/ contracts for talent, extras

PRODUCTION

1. Work next to Director and provide support.
2. Transfer info from Director to applicable persons
3. Answer questions/emails from Talent, Crew, etc - forward as necessary
4. Have script on-hand at all times and watch for script continuity
5. Keep notes for editing purposes, pick-ups needed etc.
6. Inform PC when additional dates are needed at locations w/ talent etc.
7. Schedule weekly rehearsals

POST PRODUCTION

1. Compile 'editing notes'
2. Work with PC on research and marketing, press-kits and mailings

3. Project Coordinator ( PC ) TEAM -See more.

Project Coordinator PC has two main responsibilities: Secure location date and times and schedule crew and talent appropriately. They will maintain a location list and applicable releases.They will coordinate and develop a tentative and 'final' schedule. They will work closely with the AD in updating the schedule to reflect pick-ups, etc.

PRE PRODUCTION

1. Scout Locations with Director, DP, SR
2. Collect location release forms and location schedules.
3. Collect Talent schedules
4. Post tentative schedule with deadline
5. Post 'final' schedule and receive verification email/phone call from all talent and locations.

PRODUCTION

1. Work with AD and Director on updating/editing schedule
2. Keep in close contact with Talent and Location contacts
3. Always have a plan 'B' in case of weather, sick talent, etc.
4. Schedule weekly production meeting

POST PRODUCTION

1. Compile release forms/ legalities
2. Work with AD on research and marketing, press-kits and mailings

4. Director of Photography ( DP ) TEAM -See more.

Director of Photography is in charge of every aspect of the visual experience. Their job is to convey the writers and directors vision as close as possible. They will ultimately account for final say of lighting, camera angles etc. They will manage two assistant camera persons. They will develop 'final' story board / shot list as well as set-up charts as necessary.

PRE PRODUCTION

1. Work with Director/ Writer to discuss vision, feeling and 'look'
2. Scout Locations with Director, PC, SR
3. Note lighting, power and other issues
4. Develop an equipment list (lights, filters, etc)
5. Produce 'final' story board/ shot list
6. Inform SR of any 'special' sound or audio issues on scene by scene basis

PRODUCTION

1. Manage camera setup and Lighting
2. Work with Director on talent blocking
3. Call 'roll sound' - 'camera'
4. Review shots/ setups at weekly meetings
5. Attend Rehearsals (optional)
6. Analyze dailies with Director, Writer (and Editor if applicable)

POST PRODUCTION

1. Assist in editing where needed (w/ or w/O editor)

5. Camera 1 ( AC1 ) PER-SHOOT -See more.

AC 1 is in charge of key camera functions and is camera operator when necessary or in DP's absence. They maintain filters, lenses, batteries and loading new tapes / film stock. They perform additional frame checking and shot continuity, working with AC2 and the AD. Both ACs set up and tweak lighting (unless an additional gaffer and crew has been selected). Their duties may also include Grip and Sound support.

PRE PRODUCTION

1. Help find equipment for the equipment list (lights, filters, etc)
2. Help produce 'final' story board/ shot list -

PRODUCTION

1. Set up camera / tripod
2. Assistant in Lighting
3. Charge and Replace Batteries
4. Maintain filters, lenses and camera accessories
5. Frame Check
6. Work w/ AD on shot continuity
7. Have copy of shot /set up list on hand
8. Operate camera as necessary
9. Call out time code to AC2
10. Assist DP in Camera Rigs, Dollies, etc.
11. Grip/ Sound Support

6. Camera 2 ( AC2 ) PER-SHOOT -See more.

AC 2 is in charge of key camera functions and is camera operator when necessary or in DP's absence. They maintain filters, lenses, batteries and loading new tapes / film stock. They perform additional frame checking and shot continuity, working with AC1 and the AD. Both ACs set up and tweak lighting (unless an additional gaffer and crew has been selected). 7. Sound Recordist ( SR ) TEAM See more.

The Sound Recordist is in charge of every aspect of the audio experience. Their job is to convey the writers and directors feel for each sound as close as possible. They will ultimately have final say for recording and mic choice and placement. They will manage a two person crew and oversee all audio recording and set ups.

PRE PRODUCTION

1. Scout locations and note sound issues
2. Develop equipment list ( mics, cables, etc)
3. Receive info from DP and D on sound issues (scene by scene)

PRODUCTION

1. Manage sound set up
2. Test and Monitor all sound and equipment
3. Have shot list and script on hand
4. Keep notes on sound elements for editor/ sound mixer

POST PRODUCTION

1. Work with ED / SM as necessary on sound mixing
2. Record additional SFX or dialogue as needed

8. Sound Tech. ( ST ) PER-SHOOT See more.

ST is in charge of key sound recording functions and is sound recordist when necessary or in SR's absence. They maintain all tapes or digital media. During shooting they make note of TC, help in mic tweaking and anything needed to get the best sound. Ideally they will be monitoring sound as well, focusing on continuity. Their duties may also include Grip and Lighting support.

PRE PRODUCTION

1. Help find equipment for the equipment list (mics, cables, media, etc)
2. Review info from SR on sound issues (scene by scene)

PRODUCTION

1. Assist sound set up
2. Assist Test and Monitor of all sound and equipment
3. Have shot list and script on hand
4. Keep notes on TC and sound continuity
5. Grip/ Lighting Support

6. Label and load media or tapes
7. Work w/ AC2 on slate labeling

9. Boom Operator ( BO ) PER-SHOOT - See more.

Boom Operator is in charge of boom operation and mic placement. They maintain all microphones, cables, cords etc. During shooting they work closely with SR and ST to achieve optimal sound. They will be monitoring sound as well. Their duties may also include Grip and Lighting support.

PRE PRODUCTION

2. Review info from SR on sound issues (scene by scene)

PRODUCTION

1. Assist sound set up
2. Test and Monitor of all sound and equipment
3. Grip/ Lighting Support

10. Lead Production Asst. ( Lead PA ) - See more.

The Lead PA will be a full-time crew member. Although their duties will vary continuously, they will primarily assist the Project Coordinator with 'on set' duties covered in our Production Meetings. They will have an opportunity to assist in camera, lighting, sound etc. They will also manage any other PAs that are needed.
